MISTER Chips has been named the first-ever winner of the Whitby Gazette's Chip Shop Challenge. Following reader nominations for many of the town's fish and chip shops, the field was whittled down to the four with the most votes.

Whitby Gazette deputy editor Jon Stokoe said: "Our first Chip Shop Challenge competition has been a big success. The whole world knows that Whitby fish and chips are the best but everyone here has their own favourite and for some Mister Chips may be a surprise winner. But the following extensive testing and tremendous enthusiasm from Gazette staff, Mister Chips was declared the unanimous winner. But don't take our word for it - test it out for yourselves and watch this space to see if Adrian, Sara and the team can retain their crown next year.
